Doin' Big Thangs!

Always serving up delicious green chile burgers and lemonade with a side of Hollywood!

Although our visits to LB have been less frequent over the past few months, this lunchtime joint still holds a special place in our hearts. Thus, we were thrilled to learn that the diner is featured in the opening scene of Sunshine Cleaning, shot right here in Abq during 2008.

Check out the movie trailer here!

Unfortunately this trailer does not show the amazing acting talents of Susie Yip, proud owner of LB. Yip's passionate performance as Mrs. Kim sets a strong tone for the movie as she boldly fires Norah Lorkowski (played by Emily Blunt) after shes clumsily sends an order of burgers and fries crashing to the floor. The scene also features Susie's partner in crime, Ronald Yip, who's authentic performance really adds a sense of legitimacy to the film. Overall, the Yips do an outstanding job of showcasing the wonders of LB through their silver screen performances.

With its appearance in Sunshine Cleaning, Lucky Boy stands tall as the finest eatery in the greater Albuquerque area, if not the entire state of New Mexico.

Hot Dog & Strawberry Shake

Strawberry Shake ............................................ $1.99

Hot Dog ........................................................... $1.25

Total: $3.24

3 Lucky Stars

At this point in my life, there are three things that are near and dear to my heart: ice cream, hot dogs, and LB. Lucky for me, this round at LB satisfied all three joys. Having tried the vanilla shake, I thought that I'd give the strawberry a go. The flavor could be likened to the strawberry version of Nesquik, but since we're talking about LB, I assume y'all know that it was far better than anything Nestlé has to offer this world. I've had better hot dogs in my lifetime, but honestly, you can't really set high standards for a meat slurry. I'd probably choose the green chili burger over the hot dog, but it's still nice to know that the neighborhood joint is always stocked with my favorite goods.

Getting to Know Lucky Boy

For those who have yet to experience the joy of a Lucky Boy adventure, we bring you photos of the restaurant itself.

First, a view of this fine establishment.

Wood wall paneling, brown padded chairs, and the bucket where patrons place their dirty utensils after a satisfying meal. You'll note that Lucky Boy cares about the environment and offers a recycling bin- just one more way that LB gives back to the Abq community and the world at large. Guests can choose between rectangular or square tables that comfortably seat 2-4 people or opt for the large round table when rollin' deep.

As can be seen above and at left, Lucky Boy strives to create a pleasing atmosphere with tasteful wall hangings. Gazing at the vivid blue hues really brings out the taste in the green chile burger and lemonade. For the solitary diner, there is usually a local newspaper floating around, yet another way that LB keeps us connected to the community.

To the right you will see the Lucky Boy bulletin board, complete with local business advertisements and fine cultural decorations. If you're looking to sign your son up for a choir group, LB has got your back.

Now that we've given you a small taste of Lucky Boy, go on your own adventure Monday-Friday (11:00am-6:30pm) or Saturday (11:00am-3:30pm).

Grilled Cheese and Vanilla Shake

Grilled Cheese ............................................... $1.25

Shakes - Chocolate, Strawberry, Vanilla ......... $1.99

Total: $3.24

4 Lucky Stars

There is no finer place to take a break from grad school finals than the gem that is Lucky Boy. I figured I'd give the classics a try this time around and went for a grilled cheese sandwich and vanilla shake. I've never met a shake I didn't like and this one at Lucky Boy didn't disappoint. The flavor could have been stronger, but I guess that's my fault for electing vanilla over one of the other flavors (see above). What the shake lacked in flavor it made up for in consistency- not too thick, and thus, perfectly sippable through a straw. With evenly toasted white bread and a creamy cheese filling, the grilled cheese sandwich really hit the spot! My only complaint is that I didn't order two, and so, I give this meal 4 Lucky Stars.

Ja Tze (Pork Dumplings) (5)

Ja Tze (Pork Dumplings) (5).....................................$1.90

A while back we happened upon one of the owners of Lucky Boy hard at work making dumplings. By hand. It should have clicked then and there that this was the menu item to sample, but as we are frequently hungover or brain-dead there was no click. This last visit we attempted to right this wrong.

The Ja Tze fared way better than their cousin, Bow Tze. The dumplings were nothing short of delightful, and are built for the complimentary soy sauce. Grab one of the glass bottles of SS up at the counter, and dump it all over the dumplings. You won't be disappointed. The pork is mixed with veggies, and then steamed to perfection. It would be a great compliment to the fried rice, or any of the Daily Combinations.

Chocolate Shake

Chocolate Shake.................................................$1.90

Noting that Lucky Boy does both American and Chinese cuisine, Kira and I opted to try lo americano: A shake. I got the chocolate, and was far from disappointed. It came with chunks of ice cream in it, just like I like it. The chocolate was hearty as well (don't you hate those overly milky chocolate shakes?) The point is, the shakes are solid and worth the buck ninety. You know how shakes are: when you're in the mood you're in the mood. Cialis style. So keep it hard and get a shake.
